I have been wondering, why some electrical industries like semiconductors like CPUs are so monopolistic. There are only like 1 or 2 companies doing one thing. For example, we have AMD or Intel, or TMSC or ASML.
However, I do not understand whether these sort of company arrangements really have enough competition. In car makers, for example, we have far more alternatives. Why is it that chip makers are so concentrated?
Is this a feature of the industries? How is it supposed to serve the free market ideals?
"Too monopolistic" means that they are not as open as they should be. Please don't treat it as subjective, but rather treat it by referencing something by governments or economic theory.
